Hang out in Great Smoky Mountains' Elkmont Campground in late May and early June, and you'll be in for one of Mother Nature's rarest light shows: synchronous fireflies lighting up the forest floor in pulses of electric yellow. If you want to bring 2 large tents, then make it easier on yourself and reserve 2 campsites. It is open from mid-March to late November each year. A few hints: we entered the park from the north, took backroads through Wares Valley to the west of Sevierville & Pigeon Forge to avoid the traffic but 9 miles or less from the campground found ourselves on road which did not allow trailers.
